Kraken… ’t is dat?
Zolang er woningnood is, zijn er mensen die hun woonrecht in langdurig leegstaande ruimtes opeisen. Dit wereldwijde fenomeen wordt ook wel kraken genoemd: het zonder toestemming van de eigena(a)r(esse) in gebruik nemen van een ongebruikt terrein, gebouw of een onderdeel daarvan. Nog altijd biedt kraken oplossingen; van het voorzien in woonruimte tot het creëren van ruimten voor sociale initiatieven.
Wat is het kraakspreekuur?
Kraakspreekuur (KSU) Den Haag is een solidariteitsinitiatief en informatiepunt voor- en door mensen die zich met woonstrijd bezig (willen gaan) houden. Heb je vragen over kraken? Zoek je hulp bij het organiseren van een actie tegen een dreigende huisuitzetting of de verkoop of sloop van sociale huurwoningen misschien? Kom dan langs bij het KSU!
Wat is het kraakspreekuur NIET?
Vaak komen mensen langs met de verwachting dat het KSU slaapplekken/woonruimte verstrekt. Helaas is dit niet het geval. Wat het KSU wel biedt is ondersteuning van mensen die zelf actief naar een plek op zoek zijn. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het delen van info, ervaring en contacten die voor jouw situatie van toepassing kunnen zijn.
Waarom kraken?
Door het falende woonbeleid vallen veel mensen tussen wal en schip. Ondanks het nijpende tekort aan betaalbare woonruimte staan veel woningen in de Haagse regio onnodig en langdurig leeg. De daklozenopvang kampt ondertussen met een gigantisch beddentekort en de wachttijd voor een sociale huurwoning in Den Haag is inmiddels opgelopen tot ongeveer 12 jaar. Tegen deze achtergrond doen anti-kraak bureaus zich voor als de oplossing, maar door mensen in een precaire situatie te huisvesten, hollen zij het huurrecht alleen maar verder uit. Het is duidelijk dat overheid en bedrijfsleven de woningnood niet voor ons gaan oplossen. Als je van plan bent om zelf iets te gaan kraken, schroom dan niet om bij het KSU langs te komen en stuur ons een mailtje!

Squatting… What the heck’s that?
As long as there’s housing shortage, there’ll be people claiming their right to housing in structurally vacant buildings. This worldwide phenomenon is generally being referred to as squatting: the act of taking into use an abondoned terrain, building or a part of the latter — typically without the owners consent. Until today squatting offers solutions; from providing space to live in, to the creation of spaces for social initiatives.
What is the kraakspreekuur?
Kraakspreekuur (KSU) Den Haag is a solidarity based initiative and infopoint for- and by people who are (or wish to become) active within the housing struggle movement. Do you have questions concerning squatting? Are you looking for help whilst organising an action against a threatening eviction or against the demolution of social houses perhaps? Come by the KSU!
What is the kraakspreekuur NOT?
Often people come by with the expectation that the KSU offers spaces to sleep or live. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. What the KSU does offer is support for people who themselves actively search for a place. Think about the sharing of information, experience and contacts that might be helpful and relevant for your situation for example.
Why squatting?
Due to the failing housing policy, many people fall between two stools. Despite the pressing shortage of affortable houses, many spaces in the region of The Hague remain empty unneccesarily and for long periods of time. Meantime the homeless shelters are jam-packed and the waiting time for a social house in The Hague has already risen to around 12 years. Against this backdrop property guardianship companies (anti-kraak) pretend to be the solution, but by luring people in precarious housing situations, they only further undermine tenancy law. It’s clear that both government and business aren’t going to solve the housing crisis for us. If you’re planning to squat a place, please don’t hesitate to drop by the KSU and send us an email!
